John D. Fox was appointed the University of Alaska Fairbanks' National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) in the fall of 2003. He plays a key role in oversight of athletics programs, working to ensure the academic integrity of the athletics program and the welfare of student-athletes. "In my position as FAR I hope to foster a serious, mature approach to academics on the part of the student-athlete, and a greater appreciation of the student-athletes' unique challenges and contributions to our community on the part of the faculty." Fox has been a member of the UAF faculty for 34 years, teaching various subjects in the Department of Forest Sciences and the Department of Resources Management. Fox has served as the department head for Forest Sciences and Resources Management, and serves on the UAF Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies Review Committee. Fox earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Trinity College of Connecticut in 1968, his Master of Science degree in forest resources from the University of Washington in 1970, and his doctorate in forest hydrology from UW in 1976. In addition to serving as the school's FAR, Fox is a member of the statistics crew for UAF men's basketball, a Parish Council member for St. Mark's University Catholic Parish, and the co-founder of the Farthest North Forest Sports Festival. Fox also guided UAF to national accreditation for its forestry program. Fox is a Fellow of the Society of American Foresters and has served as Chair of the Alaska Society of American Foresters. He is a two-time recipient of the National Association of College Teachers of Agriculture Teaching Award. He and his wife, Sheila, have four children.
