Forrest Karr returns to the Nanooks for his sixth year after graduating from the University of Wisconsin Law School. He began leading the department in July 2005, after serving for one year as Assistant AD for Compliance.

Karr also partnered with the School of Management to develop a Minor in Sport Management program. He teaches BA 491 Sport Marketing, BA 281 - Sport Management and BA 467 - Legal Issues in Sport & Recreation Management.

In 2006, Karr received the "Chancellor's Supervisory Award," presented to a staff member for excellence and contributions to UAF.

During Karr's three years as director, the Nanooks have crowned four NCAA champions, including three consecutive national titles for the rifle team and an individual national title for skier Marius Korthauer at the 2008 NCAA Skiing Championships. In addition, Nanook student-athlete Einar Often was the male recipient of the 2008 NCAA Division II Sportsmanship Award. Under Karr's leadership, the department hosted the 2007 NCAA Rifle Championships, which set an NCAA attendance record.

In addition, Karr has guided the implementation and growth of the women's swimming program, directed the renovation of the E.F. Horton range and worked with the Fairbanks North Star Borough to secure a four-sided center-hung scoreboard at the Carlson Center.

Karr currently serves as chair of the NCAA Ice Hockey Rules Committee and previously chaired the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Management Council.

Karr also chairs the Statewide Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Alaska and was selected 2008 Big Brother of the Year in Fairbanks.

In addition, Karr is a volunteer member of the National Ski Patrol and received the 2006 Outstanding Rookie Patroller award for the State of Alaska Division.

Karr's previous work experience includes clerking for a private law firm, Garvey & Stoddard, S.C., as well as interning in the NCAA General Counsel's office.

Prior to attending law school, Karr was a student-athlete (ice hockey) from 1996-99 at the University of Notre Dame and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's of Business Administration in Finance and Business Economics.

A four year letter-winner as goaltender for the Fighting Irish, Karr earned most valuable player honors his senior season. In recognition of classroom excellence, Karr was named to the CCHA All-Academic Team and was named an NCAA Academic All-American. After his collegiate career, Karr played one year of minor league (ECHL) professional hockey and then coached with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Karr has twice completed the Chicago Marathon, once the Big Sur Marathon and twice Fairbanks' own Equinox Marathon. In the spring of 2000, he and a friend bicycled from Juarez, Mexico to Alberta, Canada.

Karr has a dog named Hasek and his hobbies include projects for the Sunrisers Rotary Club of Fairbanks, hiking, curling, mountaineering and all types of skiing.
