Athletics and Campus Recreation Fee Q & A

What is the purpose of the Athletics and Campus Recreation fee?

Athletics and Campus Recreation has been part of the UAF campus since 1922, when our first basketball team was nicknamed the "Polar Bears." The department plays a significant role at our university by helping shape UAF's identity, attracting students, bringing national and international exposure to UAF, and providing recreational activities for all students - both varsity student-athletes and intramural student-athletes.

Fulfilling this mission comes with a price, and the continuing growth of the department's fixed costs is threatening its ability to provide strong programs. Athletics and Campus Recreation works very hard to maximize every dollar in its budget. The new $8-per-credit-hour Athletics and Campus Recreation fee, which replaces the Student Life fee, is parallel to a fee collected at the University of Alaska Anchorage and other institutions across the country.

Why was the fee implemented?

The fee was not implemented without a great deal of thought.  A Letter from the Director of Athletics discusses several reasons for the fee. The fee was recommended by the Chancellor's Cabinet and put into effect by former Chancellor Steve Jones after three years of individual discussions, group presentations and deliberation.

What are the benefits associated with the fee?

The fee, which is capped at $96 per semester, gives free admission to all home athletic competitions for all Fairbanks area students (Fairbanks Campus or Tanana Valley Campus sites) enrolled in 3 or more credits. Post-season competition is excluded. Transportation shall be provided from the UAF campus for all UAF Athletic events held at the Carlson Center.

How do I get my tickets?

Tickets are available to students one hour prior to the start of competition. Admission will only be guaranteed until the start of the eventStudents must use the designated student entrance and a valid Polar Express card is required for entry. Tickets are limited to one per valid student ID.

Who should be contacted for more information?

If you have additional questions regarding the new Athletics and Campus Recreation fee, please call the Department of Athletics and Campus Recreation at 907-474-7780 to schedule an appointment to speak with the Director.
