Coach Wakefield enters his second season with the men's basketball program after being promoted to the top assistant coaching position. He graduated with a B.S. from Tulane University in New Orleans and a M.E. from Stephen F. Austin in Texas. Wakefield worked as a manager for Division I Tulane University, which played in a very tough conference that included teams from Marquette, Louisville, and Cincinnati. While at Tulane, Wakefield learned basketball coaching methods from head coach Shawn Finney who was an asssistant to Tubby Smith when Kentucky beat Utah in the 1998 NCAA Finals. While at Tulane he was able to watch Linton Johnson develop from a college athlete to NBA caliber player (Johnson currently plays for the New Orleans Hornets). Wakefield then assisted at Archbishop Shaw High School in New Orleans for one year before working as an administrative assistant at Stephen F. Austin for two years. He worked under 1999 NAIA National Coach of the year Danny Kaspar. The team finished the 2005-2006 season 17-12 and lost in the conference tournament semi-finals. While at Stephen F. Austin Wakefield coached freshman All-American Josh Alexander.
