ALASKA NANOOK HOCKEY TO AIR ON KYSC 96.9 FM AND KSUA 91.5 FM
Aug. 11, 2006 FAIRBANKS, AK - After months of speculation, Tanana Valley Radio, in conjunction with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Athletics, announces today that their radio station, 96.9 KYSC FM, is the new radio home for Alaska Nanook Hockey. Commencing with the upcoming 2006-07 season, KYSC FM will broadcast "live" all Alaska hockey games, including the playoffs. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but KYSC will also broadcast the weekly "Inside the CCHA (Central Collegiate Hockey Association)" radio program and has plans to produce and broadcast a local coaches show. KYSC has been on the air in Fairbanks for five years and has a signal strength that reaches as far as Delta Junction and Mt. McKinley Park. 96.9 is also the # 1 ranked adult contemporary station and the #2 station overall in the Fairbanks market (25-54 age demos*). *Per the 2006 Solution Broadcast Media Group survey- Jan-Mar-'06). Tanana Valley Radio's sister company, Tanana Valley Television, acquired the television broadcast rights for Alaska Hockey in 2005 on it's FOX 7 station. The new deal paves the way for future simulcasts between the two stations. "We thank the university for the opportunity to broadcast Alaska hockey," says J.P. Hoff, the overall general manager of Tanana Valley TV and Radio. Forrest (Karr, UAF's Director of Athletics) and Patrick (Lee, UAF's Assistant AD for Marketing and Promotions) have created an atmosphere of positive growth and that is something we want to be a part of. The combo of radio and TV, together promoting Alaska hockey, will create more awareness for the program and will allow us to be more creative with the broadcasts." Karr was happy with the arrangement. "In evaluating this deal, it became overwhelmingly evident that there is great symmetry between KYSC FM and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. We admire their energy and leadership and are thrilled to partner with them. The new deal gives the department of athletics broader distribution, enhanced revenue generating opportunities and the ability to integrate our current FOX 7 television contract." "We believe a flagship partnership extends way beyond broadcasting games. KYSC does a fantastic job of propelling its properties with compelling programming that appeals to a wide-reaching audience. We look forward to working alongside KYSC to bring Alaska Hockey into their lineup through the Nanook Sports Network" In a somewhat unique arrangement, rather than displace the UAF student-run 91.5 KSUA FM as the home of Alaska Hockey, KYSC plans to work with KSUA and co-broadcast the games. KSUA will pick up KYSC's feed and continue to air the games locally and via the internet. KYSC and FOX 7's Scott Roselius, who played a major role in developing KYSC FM's hockey broadcast proposal to the University, believes keeping KSUA involved with the broadcasts is the right thing to do. "KSUA stepped forward years ago to air the games when no other station showed interest and we respect that; There will have to be some logistical coordination, but we look forward to working with KSUA Advisor Channon Price and GM Nick Brewer. It's exciting! You are essentially seeing the birth of an Alaska Nanooks radio, TV and internet network." Nick Brewer, KSUA General Manager said "KSUA 91.5 FM is excited to partner with KYSC 96.9 FM in bringing Alaska hockey to Fairbanks. KSUA will also continue to stream the Nanook hockey games to the world, online at www.ksua.net." Veteran play-by-play announcer and voice of the Nanooks, Bruce Cech, is also pleased with the situation. "I am very excited about the radio deal with KYSC FM," says Cech. "With the simulcast with KSUA, the streaming of internet audio worldwide, and television coverage with KFXF FOX 7, the Nanook hockey broadcasts will cover their biggest audience ever." "There is no doubt Bruce Cech is the voice of the Nanooks and we intend to keep it that way," added Hoff. "We also have plans to incorporate new ideas into the broadcasts to help them become more professional and better for all Nanook fans. Our goal is to take Alaska's hockey broadcasts to the next level." The first broadcast for the 2006-2007 hockey season will air on September 29, live from the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, when the Nanooks take on the U.S. Under-18 Development Team in an exhibition game at 7:05 p.m. AST.
