Blue Prevails Over Gold, 102-72

Mar Brunet of Spain made an impressive swimming debut with the Alaska Nanooks, but her Blue team still came up on the short end of a 102-72 score against the Gold in an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday at the Patty Center. Brunet, a junior, won consecutive events in the 100-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke. Swimmers are rarely entered in back-to-back events, but that didn't seem to faze Brunet as her backstroke time of 59.75 seconds was more than three seconds faster than Russian sophomore Mariya Pavlovskaya and would have been an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time last year.

Alaska Nanooks swimming head coach Scott Lemley announced the signing of Maria del Mar Brunet Guasp, from Majorca (my-YOR-kuh), Spain, on Friday. The first Spanish import in program history, Mar Burnet will enter the University of Alaska Fairbanks as a junior with two years of NCAA eligibility remaining.

Nanook Swimming Inks Two Recruits

Alaska swimming head coach Scott Lemley announced the addition of the program's first two recruits Wednesday, Anchorage native Lauren Langford and Lauren Sweet of University Place, Washington, who will join the Nanooks for the 2008-09 season. A pair of collegiate transfers, neither swimmer competed at their former institutions and will enter UAF with four years of NCAA eligibility remaining. Langford, a West Anchorage graduate in 2007, transfers to Alaska from Washington State, while Sweet arrives from Tacoma Community College.

Pavlovskya Named Swimming's MVP

Freshman phenom Mariya Pavlovskaya was named the Alaska Nanooks Most Valuable Player on Sunday at the Alaska swim team banquet. Pavlovskaya set six varsity records in her year as a Nanook.

Nanook All-Sports Banquet Set For Friday, May 2

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Athletics will hold its annual end-of-season All-Sports Banquet Friday, May 2 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Westmark Hotel in the Gold Room.

Former six-time rifle All-American and four-time NCAA Championship team member Amber Darland (1998-2002) will be the Master of Ceremony. Darland, who was an IAC Student-Athlete of the Year as a senior (2001-02), is a certified massage therapist and posture alignment specialist in Fairbanks.

UAF Athletics Earns NCAA Division II Grant To Enhance Diversity

The Athletics Department at University of Alaska Fairbanks has earned a Strategic Alliance Matching Grant from the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), which will be used over the course of the next three years to fund an Associate Athletic Director for Compliance / Senior Woman Administrator position. Compliance at the university, played a major role in helping UAF become one of just eight Division II schools selected for an NCAA Strategic Alliance Matching Grant. This award will allow her position to be elevated to an Associate Director level position, effective this summer.

Nanooks Finish 8th At PCSC Championships

Junior Samantha Zinsli and freshman Mariya Pavlovskaya became the second and third Alaska Nanook swimmers, respectively, to earn All-Conference honors over the weekend at the Pacific Collegiate Swim Coaches conference championships. The Blue and Gold achieved their team goal of improving upon their 2007, 10th place finish by taking eighth place after scoring 378 points over the four-day event.
