LONG BEACH, CA - Despite several Alaska Nanook swimmers getting results that were significantly faster than they had at any time this season, the Blue and Gold only managed to qualify one swimmer for the evening session (finals) Thursday in the first day of competition at the UC Irvine/Nike Cup day at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach.

In the 500 yard freestyle, it took a quick 5:10.19 to get into the top 32 spots for a second swim. None of Alaska's four swimmers could make the cut although Sam Zinsli (5:13.05), Kelly Becker (5:13.83), Kinsey Laine (5:20.12) and Heidi Tilicki (5:22.77) all shaved seconds off their best times.

"The competition today was intense," said head coach Scott Lemley. "Times that would have taken a swimmer into finals last year didn't come close this year."

Seventeen year-old freshman Mariya Pavlovskaya, the Nanooks highest-seeded swimmer in any event entering the Nike Cup, came through with a solid performance, becoming the lone Alaska swimmer to swim in the finals. In the process, she achieved an NCAA "B" time standard in the 200 yd IM (2:11.20), cutting two and a half seconds off her best time and varsity record.

Pavlovskaya, who entered the meet seeded in 61st with her previous lifetime best of 2:13.79, dropped more time during the finals finishing with a 2:10.70: good enough for 28th place. The UCLA women lead the meet after the first day of competition with 465 points. Alaska sits in 15th place with 46 points.

The UC Irvine/Nike Cup will continue Friday with prelims at 9:00 a.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m. at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach. Team Scores After Day One
