Pavlovskya Named Swimming's MVP

FAIRBANKS, AK - Freshman phenom Mariya Pavlovskaya was named the Alaska Nanooks Most Valuable Player on Sunday at the Alaska swim team banquet, after setting six varsity records in her first campaign as a Nanook. The Korolev, Russia, native rewrote the record books in the 200-yard backstroke (2 minutes, 8 seconds), the 100 breaststroke (1:08.59), 200 breaststroke (2:30.75), 200 individual medley (2:10.70), 400 individual medley (4:46.09) and was a member of the record-setting 800-yard freestyle relay team (8:00.49). She was also one of just two Nanooks to be named to the Pacific Coast Swimming and Diving All-Conference Team. The Most Improved award, given to the swimmer who dropped the most time in her best events, went to freshman Kinsey Laine. In other awards issued Sunday, rookies Courtney Miller and Erin Widby took home the Most Inspirational and the John C. Gilmore Scholar-Athlete Award, respectively. In addition to the award presentations, the season celebration was highlighted by a check presentation by Ramona Reeves, President of the Northern Area Aquatics Committee, which donated $5,000 to the Alaska Nanooks swim program.
